Obituary for Arthur Sutherland

Print
Arthur Sutherland, 63, passed away on Tuesday, September 25, 2018, at Hardin Memorial Hospital, In Elizabethtown, KY. He was born in Kalamazoo, MI, on October 1, 1954, the son of David Jacob Sutherland and Michiko (Fujishima) Sutherland.

Arthur graduated from Battle Creek Central High School in 1973. In May 1975, he married his wife of 43 years, Cheryl (Wigginton) Sutherland. He worked for Old Kent Bank at the Battle Creek and Kalamazoo locations as a Loan Consultant until he decided to improve his career.

He graduated in 1987 from ITT Technical Institute, Ft. Wayne, IN, with a Bachelor Degree in Automated Manufacturing Technology and an Associate Degree in Electronics Engineering.

He started at Tokai Rika (TRMI) Battle Creek in 1988 as employee number 35. He was sent to Japan for three weeks training on the Toyota Production System (TPS). Using this knowledge, Tokai Rika brought in their first complex assembly line and began manufacturing with the Lean Manufacturing approach.

In 2000, he moved his family South (so he could play golf year-around) and continued his Lean Manufacturing Manager career. He worked for TSI of Florida, SI Industries, Oshkosh Truck/McNeilus, CVG (Commercial Vehicle Group), Dana Holding, and MISA Metal Fabrication.

He was a member of the Bluegrass Automotive Manufacturing Association (BAMA) and participated in 5S, Value Stream Mapping, Line Balancing, Kaizen Blitzes, and Standardized Work implementations across the United States.

He enjoyed being with his family, playing golf year-around, working on his computer, bicycle riding, roller skating, and sitting on the beach with his feet in the water.

Arthur was a member of the Bellevue Church of Christ, Bellevue, MI.

Arthur is survived by his wife, Cheryl; his son David A. Sutherland; his daughter, Rocci (Millering) Veldman; two grand-daughters, and three great-grand-children. Also surviving are his brother, Bobby Sutherland, of Cassopolis, and his sister, Bernice Sutherland, of Battle Creek. He was preceded in death by his father and mother.

The visitation and funeral services were held in October 2018 at Baxter Funeral & Cremation Services. Interment was at Floral Lawn Memorial Gardens, Battle Creek.
