Obituary for David Michael "Mike" Kipp

David Michael "Mike" Kipp, 77, passed away on December 1, 2017 at the Legacy of NorthPointe Woods in Battle Creek, Michigan. Mike was born February 22, 1940 to John and Lauraine (Brownell) Kipp in Battle Creek, the youngest of 5 children, and he attended Battle Creek Schools.
Mike worked in two industries throughout his life, first in antenna installation, with his brothers, Jack and Jerry at Kipps Antenna Service. He then worked for Waste Management Co., and would go on to start his own very successful waste hauling business with his wife Sheila, known as Kipp's Refuse, Inc. first based in Athens, Michigan, then moving to Battle Creek to expand. Kipp's was the first company in Calhoun County to offer curb side carts. By 2000, they had sold Kipp's Refuse Inc. to Waste Management and continued Kipp Document Shredding and later retired in 2007.
Mike had a number of hobbies and interests in life. He played and coached city adult softball in his early adults years. He also organized and ran a neighborhood baseball league at Hamilton Park in the Post Addition for elementary kids. He took up golf in his later years, always looking forward to his annual trip to Myrtle Beach every February to decompress with a group of old friends. He also enjoyed deer hunting with his brother, Jerry, Father-in-law, Rex, and two hunting friends Don Wilkins and Art O'Dell. Mike was also an avid supporter of local and national 4-wheeler races that his sons' would compete in. Mike was a jack of all trades, doing much of his own home construction, plumbing, electrical and anything else that demanded his attention as a homeowner. With his wife Sheila, they served as foster parents to over 327 children through the years, and served in the Michigan Foster and Adoptive Parent Association (MFAPA) and it's annual state conference. They adopted 3 children through their 27 years of se rvice as foster parents. Mike has been a life time member of First Nazarene Church in Battle Creek.
Mike is survived by his Wife of 50 years, Sheila, Daughters, Diane (Blewett) Smyth and Susan Swafford; Sons, Michael, Todd, Joe, Scott, Steve, Andy and Matthew; and many grandchildren.
Mike is preceded in death by his Parents; Sister, Dawn; Brothers, Jack, Jerry and Jim; Infant Son, Joel; Grandson, Ryan and his Daughter-In-Law, Kelly (Michael) Kipp.
