Obituary for Debra Ann Brown (Dixon)

Debra Ann Dixon-Brown was born on July 2, 1957 in Evansville, Indiana to the late Paula Francis Dixon and the late Louis Reed. Debra received her wings and was called from labor to reward at her home in Battle Creek, Michigan on Sunday, February 5, 2023.

Debra attended public schools in the city of Battle Creek, Michigan, where she graduated from Battle Creek Central High School in 1975. Debra was married Donald Brown in 1989 and remained so unto her death. Debra had a huge heart for children. She was the embodiment of the phrase "it takes a village". Debra understood that parenting was one of the most important and difficult journeys a young mother could undertake. She devoted her life to helping family and friends who worked but struggled for daycare by being a safe haven for their children.

Debra's love for children was rivaled only by her love for bringing the entire family together for reunions. When it came to family reunions, she was a logistician extraordinaire. She could coordinate, immobilize resources, people, and materials from family members across the country. Debra was our hostess with the mostest, as she enjoyed greeting and cooking the food for the family. She was our comedian as she always kept us doubled over with laughter at these reunions.

Debra was also an avid card and BINGO player and there wasn't a BINGO hall from Battle Creek to Indiana that she did not frequent. She loved traveling with her grandmother (Aunt Betty), and grandson Poppy to find great deals at Goodwill thrift stores near and far. In her later years her love for family and friends did not wane as she kept in contact via Facebook, Facetime and the telephone calls.

Debra was preceded in death by her mother, Paula Dixon; father, Louis Reed; and brother, Rodney Dixon. She is survived by "children" Latoma R. Porter of Battle Creek, Nathaniel "Boo" Porter of Battle Creek, James (Wanda) Broadnax of Battle Creek; grandchildren, Typriest Porter, Talasia Brooks, Tre'Seante Warren-Porter, Jalisa Wingfield, Zaniah Hollis, Zah'Bre'ayrria Dixon- Porter, Tavier "Poppy" Jones; "Sisters", Jacqueline Dixon of Los Angeles, California, and Tomika Dixon of Kissimmee, Florida; "Special daughter", Monica Jones of Kalamazoo, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, uncles, aunts and friends.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Debra will take place on Saturday, February 18, 2023 at the Baxter Funeral and Cremation Service starting at 1:00 pm.
