Obituary for Donald Powell Dexter

Donald Powell “Don” Dexter, 89, of Kalamazoo passed away Tuesday, December 21st 2021.

Don was born on August 12th, 1932 to Hylton and Myrtle (Powell) Dexter of Fenton, Michigan.

Don is survived by his five children; Shelly, Daniel, Douglas, Jennifer and Julia. 12 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

Don was preceded in death by his mother and father, a brother, Roderick, and sister,
Geraldyne.

Don graduated from Fenton High school in 1950. Shortly after he served in the Army as a personal administrative supervisor. During that time he acquired new culinary skills as well. He was an amazing cook, and loved to prepare meals for his family. After his time in the Army, he was a door-door salesman for fine cookware. Don worked his way up to management and won numerous awards. He was a jack of all trades, a real handyman. He had a huge heart and a passion for helping others. Don bought homes and provided them to people in need. He enjoyed traveling to visit with family and seeing attractions along the way. He was fond of making memories. He loved collecting and believed everything had value. He had an interest in automobiles and liked going to car shows and museums. He instilled values into his children and pushed them to grow and learn. He watched 60 Minutes and Sunday Morning, and enjoyed reading everything from the funnies in the newspaper to Chicken Soup for the Soul. He enjoyed sitting on the porch with his dog watching the world around him. He went to South Haven often taking in many beautiful sunsets.

Don had an infectious smile and the brightest kindest blue eyes. His company was enjoyed by everyone.

Funeral services are scheduled for noon, January 5th 2022 at Baxter Funeral home, interment to follow at Fort Custer National Cemetery at 2:30pm
