We sadly announce the passing of Eliza Mae Flood; Mae to friends & family. Mae was born 92 years ago in Wynnewood, Oklahoma to Mabel & Wylie Hervey. Mae was the eldest of nine children. She was a straight A student and was skipped ahead by her teachers, twice. Mae graduated from high school at 16. After graduating from high school, Mae had various jobs; she, like many women during WWII, worked in a factory making B-52’s for the war. After a time, Mae was headed to college. She graduated from Langston University in 1948. In 1950, she married Alfred Flood and they had four children. She was a substitute teacher in the Battle Creek public school system, sometimes subbing in the classrooms of her children. In 1966, she began working for social services. Mae was a social worker for 23 years. When she retired, she became a volunteer at Leila Hospital for 27 years.
The marriage ended, but Mae found companionship with Daniel Roberson that lasted for 28 years, until his death. Mae became a member of Mt. Zion AME Church when she first came to Battle Creek, even singing in the choir. She re-affirmed her commitment to Mt. Zion, becoming the “poetess” of Mt. Zion with her poetry and announcements. Mae loved gardening & she loved to pull weeds! She was a whiz at playing bridge. If you played with or against her in cards, you better know what you’re doing, because she did and let you know.
