Obituary for Ellen May Sweet

Ellen May Sweet passed away Friday, May 14, 2021 at Bronson Battle Creek Hospital at the age of 84.

Ellen was born May 19, 1936 to Martha Ellen Haithcock and Raymond Ellsworth Clark Sr. She attended Battle Creek Public Schools, where she graduated. She worked at Fort Custer State Home until it closed in 1974, thereafter, she worked at the Kalamazoo State Hospital for a short time until unforeseen health conditions. Ellen was a devoted Jehovah Witness member of the Kingdom Hall. She enjoyed spending time with her family and taking her grandchildren to the park and McDonalds. Ellen also loved to watch Little House on the Prairie, Gunsmoke, and The Young and the Restless. Her favorite food was Chinese, she loved it.

Ellen married the late James Sweet, Jr. in 1953. They had five children: Ronald Sweet, Elizabeth Sweet, Darrell Sweet, Kenneth Sweet, and Julaine Sweet-Scott; they also have a blended family: Janice (James) Sweet-Fairley, Jerry Sweet (Horton), and H.J. (Butch) Sweet. In addition to, Stellana McBride. She cherished her grandchildren: DeAndro Sweet, Sr., Frederick (Shannon) Sweet, LaTasha Sweet, Rahni Sweet, NaStachia Sweet, James Anthony Sweet-Gatling, Marquist Sweet-Gatling, Kenicha Edwards, and E’Vanda Young; Aunt, Betty Sheppard and cousin, Angie Johnstone, both of LaQuinta, California. Ellen also has seventeen great-grandchildren, and three great great-grandchildren; blended grandchildren, DeShawn, Stephanie Sweet, and Royce Collins.

Ellen is preceded in death by her husband, James Sweet, Jr.; her parents, Raymond Clark, Sr. and Martha Haithcock (Smith); brothers, Raymond Clark, Jr. and Frederick Theodore Clark; sister, Beverly Clark (Olds); son, Darrell Frederick Sweet and blended daughter, Jerry Deloris Sweet (Horton).

The funeral service funeral service will be held at the Baxter Funeral & Cremation, 375 W. Dickman Road, on Friday, May 21, 2021, 11:00 am with Pastor Frederick J. Sweet officiating. The family will be receiving friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.
