Obituary for Ernest Townsend
Ernest "Ernie" Townsend, 79, of Battle Creek, MI passed away on Tuesday, July 11, 2023.
Ernie, son of the late Ernest Townsend and Ruby V. (Payne) Townsend, was born on July 25, 1943 in Battle Creek. He attended Battle Creek Public Schools and graduated from Battle Creek High School in 1961.
Following high school, he began employment with Szabo Foods at the Kellogg Company. He was later employed by the VA Hospital as a Nursing Assistant for 28 years until his retirement.
Ernie was a member of the Second Missionary Baptist Church. He loved spending time with his family and friends. He was in the TNBA Bowling League for many years. Ernie's favorite hobbies included photography, music and singing. The group consisted of Stan Tuggle, Mike Nunnally, Joe and Willie Bell. The group toured with the USO and Air Force to Greenland, Newfoundland and Labrador in 1964. After returning, they were joined by Jeannette (Holley) Broadway.
Ernie referred to himself as "The Real EJT from the music corner of the world".
In 1963 Ernie united in marriage with Yvonne Scott. To that union, 2 daughters were born, Kia (Leodis Williams) and Kandace (Andre) Johnson.
Ernie was remarried in July of 2009 to his present wife, Esther Hernandez. They met while working together at the VA. Esther had 2 children, Barry (Rebecca) Quinones and Arlyn Quinones (Michael Thrash).
Ernie leaves to treasure his memory Kia (Leodis), Kandace (Andre), Barry (Rebecca), Arlyn (Michael); grandchildren, Mannie, Ondre, Salomon, Nicole, Kory, Zahir, Sabi, Naysa, Domonique; great grandchildren, Je'Mear, Dominique, Orion and a host of nieces and nephews.
Ernie was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Ruby; brother, Gordon; four sisters, two uncles and grandson, Dominique McKinney.
