Obituary for Geneva Porter (Stanford)

Geneva Porter, 84, of Battle Creek, Michigan, passed away on Thursday, March 24, 2022 at the Calhoun County Medical Care Facility. She was born on September 17, 1937, the daughter of Lazarus and Rosie Lee (Head) Stanford.

Geneva Stanford was married to Nathaniel Porter and they had seven children together, Mary (Darren) Vaughn, Frank (Vanessa) Primer, Nathaniel Porter Jr., Rossie (Raymond) Miller, Evelyn (Pierre) Porter-Holland, James( April) Porter, and Nolan (Raquel) Porter-Wade.

Other cherished family members include her siblings, Arlene Smith; Melvin Stanford and Nancy Proctor, a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.

Geneva accepted Christ in 1953. She loved to fish, garden, cook and feed everyone in town; she was known for her famous biscuits. Mom loved people and gave wonderful hugs and made sure everyone was welcome. She never met a stranger.

She started her spiritual journey in Mississippi, upon coming north she was a member of Shiloh Missionary Baptist church under Willie T. Taylor, later under Pastor Craig Tatum of First Salem Missionary Baptist Church, then later became a member of Emmanuel Covenant Church under Overseer Pastor Frederick James Sweet for several years, being the matriarch of the church.

Her homegoing service is set for Monday, April 4th, 2022; family hour from 11 am - 12 pm, homegoing service 12 pm - 1:30 pm and repass 2:30 pm - 6:30 pm at the Baxter Funeral and Cremation Service, 375 W. Dickman Road, Battle Creek, MI 49037.
