Irene (Hodl) Gruell, 72, passed away peacefully in her sleep with her devoted grandchildren by her side on Sunday morning, October 22, 2023 at their residence in Bellevue, Michigan.
Irene was born on December 12, 1950 in Heinstadt, West Germany to parents Phillip and Ludmila Hodl. She was a middle child, the 7th of 15 children.
Irene had a very adventurous but cautious spirit and at the age of 17 she took the biggest chance of her life and married, Adrian Jerome Gruell, a Sergeant in the U.S. Army 101st airborne division, The Screaming Eagles Helicopter squadron stationed at Ramstein Air Force base in West Germany. After his service ended the couple moved to the "states" and settled near his older brother, Phillip and Ethel Gruell in Michigan. They eventually settled in the wonderful village of Bellevue, Michigan where they raised their 2 sons, John and Kirk. Irene was never satisfied with just mediocre and continued her education eventually earning a Bachelor's of Science degree in Nursing from Michigan University. Irene's proudest crowning achievement and one that she loved to boast about was her advanced degree as a helicopter flight nurse from the University of Michigan School of Medicine. During her life she worked in the Nursing field at the V.A. Hospital in Ft. Custer. In 2010 she retired with 35 years of service. After her retirement she continued to work as a Registered Nurse at the Kellogg's Cereal Company in Battle Creek, Michigan. She also worked at A Forever Recovery on St. Mary's Lake, and Maxima Home Healthcare before finally calling it quits in 2020.
Irene was a truly blessed soul loved by anyone who spent time with her, she will be deeply missed by friends and family.
