Obituary for James Stewart Messner

James "Stu" Stewart Messner, 89, of Battle Creek, Michigan, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 4, 2022 at the Glenn Arbor Hospice Residence. He was born on April 19, 1932, the son of Freed and Adah (Stewart) Messner.

Stu retired from and was a member of the 25 Year Club at Post Cereal in Battle Creek.

He is survived by his daughter, Liz (Jeff) Askew; grandchildren, Carl Askew, Mandy (Joe) Hinton; great grandchildren, Julian (Vashti) Lankard, Hunter (Lacee) Lankard, Taylor Case; brother, Freed "Fritz" (Janice) Messner; step-children, Ginny Uptgraft, Carl Censke, Tom (Judy) Censke, Mike Censke, Dave (Gina) Censke, Deb Censke and several step grandchildren and step great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Shirley Messner; second wife, Pauline Messner and son, Anthony "Tony" Messner.

Stu achieved Eagle Scout at the young age of 13, he later remained a Scout leader for many years. He enjoyed coaching baseball, was an avid bowler, participated in many bowling leagues throughout his life and was a huge University of Michigan sports fan. Stu loved watching golf on television and playing, traveling, hunting and fishing and always tested his luck when buying his scratch off tickets on a daily basis at Duffy's Party Store.

Visitation will be held at the Baxter Funeral & Cremation Service on Tuesday, April 19, 2022 from 12:00 - 2:00 pm with the celebration of Stu's life immediately following at 2:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Humane Society of South Central Michigan.

Interment will take place in the Floral Lawn Memorial Gardens.
