Obituary for Julia Hulda Allen (Wagner)

The family of Julia Hulda (Wagner) Allen announces the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great grandmother, sister, aunt and friend on September 26, 2023. Julia was born January 19, 1925 in Climax, Michigan, the daughter of Calvin J. Wagner and Elizabeth M. (Weigand) Wagner. She graduated from Battle Creek Central High School and then attended Bob Jones College in Cleveland, TN. She returned to Battle Creek and began an administrative job at Fort Custer assisting German prisoners of war with translation of documents. She was introduced to her future husband, who was visiting relatives in Battle Creek, by his brother. She married Melvin R. Allen on May 4, 1947 at the Four Fold Gospel Church on Capital Avenue. They purchased land and began to build and create their own home together. Here they joyfully settled for over sixty years. He preceded her in death in 2013 after more than sixty-six years of marriage.

Julia was a homemaker and “lunch lady” for the Harper Creek Schools when her children were young. Later she was employed by the Battle Creek Federal Center in logistics and cataloging and retired in1987 after seventeen years.

She enjoyed cooking, baking, and their vegetable and flower gardens. She sang in the church choir with her husband for many years and there are memories of them singing together around a piano at family gatherings. They enjoyed attending garage sales and auctions, camping in the early years and some travel in later life. She was a tireless worker who never sat still and was always doing something for someone. No one could leave her home without food or a flower bouquet. Most of all, she enjoyed being with her family at any opportunity-sports or school events, family gatherings, or just dropping in for a visit. She loved to have her entire family together and Thanksgiving was a special and memorable event every year-especially for the grandchildren. Grandma and Grandpa’s place was a delightful and happy place for all, and many treasured memories were formed there.

Julia lived her last ten years as a resident of North Pointe Woods, where she made new friends and enjoyed music and crafting activities.. She remained positive and cheerful and was appreciated by the staff, who cared for her lovingly. For several years Friday has been a particularly special day with visits from two devoted friends who brought Skylar to see her for dog therapy comfort.

She is survived by her three children, Nanette (Richard) Wahll, Kelley (Nancy) Allen, and Kevin Allen. Grandchildren-Julie Wahll, Kay (Tony) Hubbard, Jonathan (Heidi) Allen, Benjamin (Laura Langford) Allen, Jill (Cass) Butler and Kaitlin Allen, nine great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Julia was preceded in death by her parents, husband, grandson Drew Allen Wahll, daughter-in-law Tammy (Matthews) Allen and all of her siblings- Lois Wagner, Erna (Wagner) Johnson, Matthew Wagner, Edward Wagner and Alice (Wagner) Beach.

At age ninety-eight she is still remembered and loved by many friends from work, church and the neighborhood. She, and her countless daily prayers for each of us will be greatly and forever missed.

A private family memorial service will be conducted at a later date.
