Obituary for Laura Lee Craig
Laura Lee Craig (McKeever) passed away after a prolonged illness on August 3, 2019.
Laura was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan on July 22, 1945. She attended St. Augustine High School in Kalamazoo, graduating in 1963. Then, she attended Western Michigan University where she studied education and met Donn Craig, whom she married in 1967.
Laura began her teaching career in Comstock, Michigan. Later, she taught at Woodlawn Nursery School in Battle Creek. After staying home with her children Matt and Jennie for many years, she worked at the FAA in Battle Creek before returning to teaching at Minges Brook Elementary School, also in Battle Creek. Laura loved her students and coworkers. Her classroom was filled with pigs, a nod to one of her favorite books she shared with her students, Babe the Gallant Pig.
Laura’s life was defined by her love of family and friends. There was nothing she’d rather do than spend time with the many people close to her. To her, there was no better vacation than visiting family. She used every opportunity to visit her brothers, Donn’s brothers, and her children. Laura made lasting personal connections wherever she went. She was always generous and thoughtful towards her countless friends, new and old, and family. She loved being a mom, and often reflected on the most joyous years of her life being when her children were young. As she grew older, she discovered that if anything could top motherhood, it was time spent with her four granddaughters. She could not have been prouder or more in love with each of them.
She is survived by her two children Matt (Beth) Craig and Jennie (Marty) Auster; brothers Jim (Pat) and Tim (Dawn); and grandchildren Allie, Katie, Tabby and Hadley. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband of nearly 50 years, Donn V. Craig.
A private service to memorialize Laura will be held for friends and family in Battle Creek. Memorial donations are welcome to the Scleroderma Foundation and the Humane Society of South Central Michigan in Battle Creek.
