Obituary for Leo Wilbur Spencer

Leo Wilbur Spencer, 93, of Battle Creek, Michigan, passed away February 12, 2023. He was born January 27, 1930, in Battle Creek, Michigan, to Vanie Dewey and Ruth Lauretta (Thompson) Spencer.
Leo was a Korean War Veteran, serving with the US Army with the 5th Army, 25th Infantry Division, Field Hospital, as a truck driver in January 1951- December 1952. On April 3, 1953, he was united in marriage to Lou Eva Mathis. They made their home in Battle Creek and raised three boys. Leo worked for the city of Battle Creek for 13 years and retired from General Motors after 25 years of work at the age of 62.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 257 and attended Cornerstone Church. Leo enjoyed watching baseball, playing horseshoes, and ice fishing. He loved telling stories of his life experiences to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Leo was inseparable from his wife, Lou. The two loved gardening, doing yardwork, and going out to eat weekly with friends. They celebrated 69 years of marriage this past April.
Leo is survived by his wife, Lou Spencer; sons, Curtis Spencer, Gary Spencer, and Tracy Alan (Elizabeth) Spencer; grandchildren Jeremy (Tracie) Spencer, Jonathan (Darcy) Spencer, Jennifer (Michael) Cochard, Amy (Luis) Aguirre, and Bethany (David McBroom) Spencer; 15 great-grandchildren; siblings Jackqulene Kelley, Vanetta Neil, and Robert (Sue) Spencer, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Jimmy Spencer; close brother-in-law, Kenneth Kelley; daughter-in-law, Shirley Spencer; and his parents.
Services will be held February 27, 2023, at Baxter Funeral Home, with visitation beginning at 10:00AM, service at 11:00AM, followed by luncheon at 12:00PM. The family would like to thank Calhoun County Medical Care Facility for their attentiveness, kindness, and support for this past year. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the American Legion Post 257 in his honor.
