Lester Clay Stokes, 89, of Battle Creek, Michigan, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, May 18, 2017 at Bronson Battle Creek. He was born on July 4, 1927, the son of Walter Stokes and Susie (Wright) Stokes.
Lester worked construction at Local 355 for 60+ years. He helped build many of the buildings that are prominent in the area.
Lester is survived by his Wife, Essie Mae (Holmes) Stokes; Daughters, Patricia (Andrew) Figgures, Barbara Weever, and Son, Lester Stokes, Jr.; Sister, Christine Henry; Brother, Walter Stokes; 9 Grandchildren; 25 Great-grandchildren; 3 Great-great-grandchildren special sister-in-law, Betty Banks and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and other loving family. He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Shirley Stokes, two brothers, and five sisters.
Lester loved to be outdoors. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and working in his garden. He was a people person; he loved everybody. He was a kind and generous man and his memories will be cherished by all the lives he touched throughout his life.
Visitation will be held at the Baxter Funeral & Cremation Service, 375 W. Dickman Road, on Friday, May 26, 2017 from 12 Noon to 1:00 p.m. followed by a celebration of his life at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Ricky Bradley of New Hope Church of God in Christ officiating.
Interment will take place in the Oak Hill Cemetery.
