Obituary for Lorna Jo Brown-Powell Fletcher

Lorna Jo Brown-Powell Fletcher beloved wife, mother, grandmother and so much more sadly passed away on Tuesday August 23, 2022. Lorna Jo was born to Billie Mae Moton and Anthony Holmes on May 21, 1941. Lorna was reared in Flint, MI alongside siblings, Toni Bishop, Anthony P Holmes, Jesse Ross & Albert Holmes. Lorna graduated from Flint Northern High School. Lorna was in the very FIRST graduating class of black nurses at the University of Michigan with her bachelor’s degree in Nursing Science. She went on to obtain her master’s degree in nursing science and was a PhD candidate from U of M as well. She also began pursuing a law degree from Wayne State University. Lorna enlisted in the United States Army at the age of 45 after having a family of her own and rose to the ranks of Captain during her service. She worked tirelessly within military psychiatric nursing facilities across the country.
Lorna leaves to cherish her memory; her loving husband Lee Fletcher, 5 of her 6 children Richard Brown, Lorne (Carolyn) Brown, Roderick (Bethany) Brown, Jangul Powell, J’necionel Powell, and Kwamise Fletcher. 8 grandchildren, Alia Childs-Brown, Alycia Childs-Brown, Alydia Childs-Brown, Alyx Childs-Brown, Xavier Tuggerson, Lorna Brown, Elyse Brown, & Justice Maximus Brown, her brother, Albert P Holmes of Milwaukee, WI and a host of other family & friends.
She was preceded in death by her daughter Lorne` Richelle Brown, her parents, 3 of her siblings, cousin Lucille Boyd, Aunt Clara Brown, friend & confidante Patricia Smith & many other precious souls within her inner circle.
Lorna filled every room with an undeniable presence & commanded notice by all those she encountered. She enthralled all whom had the pleasure of being around her with endless amounts of laughter & showed her love for her family in abundance by cooking for them (her corn beef & cabbage is legendary). She made sure her family understood the value of togetherness & building a sense of community throughout. There will never be another like her & the memories & love she cultivated will live on through eternity.
The family expresses great gratitude to Baxter Funeral & Cremation Service and Funeral Receptionist Carol Clemons, Fort Custer National Cemetery, Bronson Methodist Hospital of Kalamazoo, Michigan & their wonderful medical team that cared for our loved one during her time of need.
