Obituary for Lorraine Carol Slayton (Zuehlke)
Lorraine Carol Slayton, 82, of Battle Creek, Michigan, passed away on Saturday, February 18, 2023 at The Oaks at Northpointe Woods. She was born on September 6, 1940 in Battle Creek, the daughter of Louis J. Zuehlke and Elizabeth M. (Smolark) Zuehlke.
Lorraine was a 1958 graduate of Battle Creek Central High School, serving as the Senior Class Secretary. She married her high school sweetheart, Ronald J. Shupp Sr. in September of 1959. Together they had four sons, six grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. After graduating high school, Lorraine worked short stints at the Battle Creek Gas Company and Michigan Bell Telephone Company. She then entered employment at Kellogg’s, where she enjoyed many years working in the factory until retirement.
Lorraine married her second husband, David Slayton in July 1977.
Lorraine is survived by her sons, Steven Shupp, Ronald (Suzanne) Shupp Jr., James (Amy) Shupp, Roger Shupp; stepchildren, Jeff Slayton, Jeanne (Joe) Collins, Jan Basso, Jill Slayton; grandchildren, Jackson, Katie, Brianna, Mikaela, Segar, Grissom, Sean, Elleot, Brandon, Nicole, Jeff and Jessica; great grandchildren, Emersyn, Aidan, Cash, Salem, Amaya and Tanis; nieces and nephew, Sheila, Randy and Shelley; special friends, Judy Hemsoth and Kathy Banaszak. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, David B. Slayton and brother, Roger Zuehlke.
Many of Lorraine’s pleasures in life were gardening, preserving, raising many dogs, playing cards and participating in the local Bunko Club with her friends for many years. She traveled with David in their motor home visiting her children across the country. Her favorite restaurants in Battle Creek were Sullivan’s, The Buckingham, and Volcano Pizza. One of the most memorable events in her life was meeting her musical idol Tom Jones in Las Vegas with her best friend Judy Hemsoth.
Graveside services will be held at the Fort Custer National Cemetery, on Friday, February 24, 2023 at 11:30 am.
