Obituary for Lucille Marie Smith (Rexius)

Lucille Marie Smith (nee Rexius), 89, of Springfield, Michigan, passed away at her home on Wednesday, January 18, 2023.

In July she was diagnosed with uterine cancer and chose to do hospice in her home. Her daughters, Brenda, Lorelie and Danni came to stay with her and her granddaughter Jacqui to take care of her.

She was born December 21, 1933 in Saginaw, Michigan to Henry H. and Helen A. (nee Pretzer) Rexius.

She graduated from Arthur Hill High School in Saginaw in 1952, and married Jacques D. Smith on March 31, 1959 in Ringold, GA. Over the course of her life she worked at various jobs including Swan Ice Cream in Saginaw, and Kelloggs and Mann Filters in Battle Creek. She was preceded in death by her husband, her infant son Randall Scott, and her daughter Jennifer Leigh Salehi.

She is survived by her daughters Brenda J. Connolly (Doug) of Montgomery Village, MD; Lorelie J. Dake (Butch) of Hastings, MI; and Danette M. Shearer (Michael) of Goshen, IN, as well as grandchildren Jacqueline Michael, Maria Ako (Lee), Jessica Luff (Rod), Nicholas and Caitlin Connolly, Juliet Kratz (Ben), and Joshua Shearer, and her niece who was like a daughter to her, Mary Wuckert (Len). She was eagerly awaiting the arrival of her first great-grandchild baby girl Luff.

She loved her family very much and was always busy caring for her 4 kitties and taking care of her home. She enjoyed reading, quilt making, country music, Scrabble, as well as the games shows Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy.

Early in their married life she and her husband lived in Tucson, Arizona, where their second daughter was born, and in Washington state. In 1966, they moved to Wasilla, Alaska, pulling their trailer over the then-unpaved Alaskan Highway. They settled on a dairy farm in Palmer, Alaska, and gave birth to their third daughter. In 1998 they returned to Alaska and toured the state in an RV. They were pioneers and travelers in their life together, and that spirit stayed with them throughout their lives.

She will be interred at the Fort Custer National Cemetery following a service on Tuesday January 24, 2023, at the Baxter Funeral Home.
