Obituary for Margaret Elizabeth Smith

Margaret E. Smith, age 91 of Battle Creek, passed away peacefully after a short illness on July 20, 2022 at Glenn Arbor Hospice Residence in Battle Creek. She was born December 30, 1930 in Detroit. She was the daughter of Harry L. and Vergual (Freer) Smith.

Margaret graduated from Belleville High School and then moved on to her beloved Michigan State University where she earned her Bachelor of Science Degree (1953) and Master of Science Degree (1959). While at MSU she also earned a varsity letter in swimming. She remained a huge fan of everything Spartan throughout her life. After MSU, Margaret began her life’s work in healthcare and in 1962 settled in Battle Creek to work at Leila Post Hospital and Health Center where she would spend the majority of her career. At Leila Post she started her career as a Teaching Supervisor in Medical Technology. She then moved into various administrative roles until 1983 when she became Assistant to the President of the hospital. She served on many boards and was a member of many organizations including: Health Careers Council of Calhoun County, Michigan State Society of Medical Technology, Kellogg Community College committee for Medical Laboratory Technicians Curriculum, Delegate to the National Convention ASMT in Detroit and Las Vegas, and she was recognized by Michigan Governor William Milliken for Development and Participation in Programs of Physical Fitness and Health. After retirement, Margaret remained in Battle Creek and enjoyed golfing, gardening, traveling, woodworking, attending Michigan State Football games and watching Big Ten athletic events.

Margaret is survived by her sister-in-law, Ann P. Smith of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan; nephews, John L. (Marrianne) Smith of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, David W. (Linda Morton) Smith of Bremerton, Washington, and Patterson P. Smith of Peoria, Arizona; nieces, Margaret Ann (Gordon) McKillop of Kingwood, Texas, Cathryn McKillop of Houston, Texas, Kristina McKillop of Kingwood, Texas and Amy (Barrett) Hartman of Spanaway, Washington; Godchildren, Jessica Leigh (William Joseph) Laib of Cincinnati, Ohio and Adam O’Neill of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; long-time friend and caregiver, Jan Tolf of Battle Creek, many loving family members and friends, and the entire Tolf family who have loved and cared for her for many, many years. Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, and her brother, Lawrence E. Smith.

As was her wish, Margaret has been cremated and a celebration of her life is being planned for later this year.
