Obituary for Normita Durano Hansen

Normita Durano Hansen, of Battle Creek, went to be with her Lord On October 5, 2022 surrounded by her loving family.

Normita was born March 24, 1947 in Ormoc City on the island of Leyte in the Philippines, the daughter of Modesto Ramos Durano and Eladia Belarmino Estremos.

Normita's zeal for life displayed itself in many ways. She was a passionate gardener whose gardens were on the Battle Creek Leila Arboretum garden tour twice. Both times she started with an empty landscape and created floral beauty.

She had the gift of hospitality. Strangers soon turned to friends then family. She held countless gatherings in her home and poolside. Her personality, cooking, presentations and generous portions were a highlight at her parties.

Every holiday was an occasion to create special memories for all that attended. She especially liked the 4th of July and held a deep appreciation for living in America.

She expressed herself through dancing and was part of the Intercontinental Dance Troupe for over fifteen years. The troop danced native Philippine, Hawaiian, Tahitian and Belly dances regaled in full costumes.
She dedicated her life to loving her husband, children, grandchildren and many friends that became as family to her. She selflessly put their needs above hers. She had a sweet approach to life but when necessary her feisty sassy side would appear.

Her faith was the cornerstone of her life. She felt her mission in life was to share her faith and pray for others. Her faith sustained and carried her as she admirably and courageously dealt with pancreatic cancer for the final year of her life.

Throughout her life she surrounded herself with various angels and now through death she is dancing and gardening with them all. She has now become one of them and will faithfully watch over all those she loved.

Left to cherish her memory is her husband of 36 years Brian and her daughters Angela (Karen) Mercer, Therese (Brent) Murphy, Grandchildren Cassie, Sean and Adriana . Her two sisters Lolita Durano Rojas and Carmen Durano Kuenseler as well as many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and five siblings.

Visitation will be held October 13th 2022 from 2-5 pm followed by a Mass at 5pm at Baxter Funeral & Cremation Service. Immediately following the mass, a celebration of life will be held at Riverside Country Club from 6 to 9 pm.

Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society.
