Obituary for Paul Markos

Paul Markos, 76, reunited with his beloved wife Sharon in heaven on February 11, 2020. Paul was one of nine children born to Elias and Alvona Markos; emigrants from Macedonia who had settled in Battle Creek in 1927. He attended the Battle Creek Public Schools and retired from Ralston Food Company after working many years as a production worker. Paul found great comfort in the Macedonian food, music and language that had been passed on to him. For many years you could find Paul in the kitchen, cooking one of his favorite dishes. And if he had recently purchased his favorite Feta cheese, his family secretly hoped that they would be the lucky recipients of the delicious Spanakopita (spinach pie) he and Sharon would make from scratch.
In recent years Paul discovered a fondness for the game of soccer, particularly when his grandson Evan was playing or when cheering on their favorite teams. He also thoroughly enjoyed his lunch and dinner dates with his sons and their families; the gift of friendship he found in the grief group he attended; gardening; volunteering for Meals on Wheels; rooting for the Chicago Bears and Chicago Cubs; and those moments during holiday dinners or gatherings where he could find himself engaged in conversation with one of the many people, young or old, who were special to him.
Paul is survived by son’s Todd (Lynette) Markos of Kalamazoo, Anthony (Maria) Markos of Marshall, and Matt (Angie) Markos of Battle Creek; grandchildren Jordyn, Evan, Nate, Heather, Hailey and Zach; sisters Vangie Werrbach, Mary Ann (Bruce) Parkins, Nancy (Eduardo) Vitale and many other extraordinary family members and friends near and far. He was preceded in death by his wife Sharon, parents, brothers Pete, Larry, Steve, Johnny, and sister Helen.
The family welcomes you to a visitation gathering on Saturday, February 22 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. at Baxter Funeral Home in Battle Creek. Light refreshments will be served.
In lieu of flowers the family kindly asks that donations be made to the Grief Support Department of Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan or your local Meals on Wheels agency.
