Obituary for Rex M. Welch

Rex M. Welch, 98, of Battle Creek, Michigan, passed away on Wednesday, November 11, 2020. He was born on January 15, 1922, the son of the late Gradion and Eve (Flamigan) Welch. Rex joined the military in 1939, at the age of 17. He served in the U.S. Army, entering as a private. Rex went through Airborne training and served in 82nd Airborne Division. He saw combat in Africa, Sicily, Italy, and France during the Normandy Invasion during WWII. In his service to his country, Rex was wounded in combat four times; three times during World War II and once during Korea. He served in the military until 1960 and retired as a Captain. After his military career, Rex worked as a nailer, and security guard. He was a religious man, who enjoyed reading the Bible; the Book of John was his favorite. Rex joined the Gideon's in 1958 and was also a member of the Lion’s Club. Rex was a member of the Rhema Word Outreach Center. He was married several times over the years to Annie, Marian, Delle and Audry.

Rex is survived by his wife Dora Lynn (Young); daughter, Gloria Jean; stepchildren, Steve, Denise and Randy (Angie); very special friend, Eleanor and several extended family members. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Mary Lou Aford; Brothers, James Thomas Welch and Maurice Welch; son, Thomas Charles Welch; daughters, Brenda Diane and Janet Ann and stepson, Donald Braun.

Visitation will be held at the Baxter Funeral & Cremation Service, 375 W. Dickman Road, on Tuesday November 17, 2020 from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm, the funeral service will follow at 12:30 pm with Pastor Cheryl Jones. Interment will take place in the Fort Custer National Cemetery with military honors being bestowed. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in Rex's name may be made to Gideon's Club.
