Obituary for Richard Dale DeWitt

Dr. Richard Dale DeWitt, 93, of Battle Creek, Michigan, passed away on Thursday, August 18, 2022 at Provision Assisted Living in Grand Rapids. He was born on June 5, 1929, the son of Archie DeWitt and Esther (Riggall) DeWitt.
Richard attended school in Rushville, IL where he played High School football. He enrolled in the National College of Chiropractic in Chicago, IL in 1948. In 1950 he enlisted in the US Air Force where he flew 30 combat missions as a gunner on a B29 Bomber from Okinawa to North Korea. In 1952 he returned to the U.S as an instructor in air-to-air fueling until his discharge in 1954, attaining the rank of Staff SGT. After his time in the military he returned to Chicago to finish his Chiropractic degree. Upon graduating in 1957 he moved to Michigan and started practicing, first in Marshall then in Battle Creek until retiring in 1991.
Richard is survived by his Wife of 62 years, Jean Carol (Julien) DeWitt; Sons, Gregory (JoAnn) DeWitt and Gary DeWitt; Grandsons, Samuel DeWitt, Cameron DeWitt; Granddaughters, Katie (Matt) Amorello, Michelle (Joe) Sugiyama and Lydia DeWitt; Great-granddaughters, Jamie DeWitt and Pryor DeWitt. He was preceded in death by his Parents; Son, Michael DeWitt; Daughter, Sharon Lee Russell; Sister, Betty Settles and Shirley DeWitt; Former Wife, Vera Lee DeWitt.
After retirement, Richard, divided time between Battle Creek and Casa Grande, AZ. His many interests included golfing, snowmobiling, square dancing, hiking & volunteering at the local hospital. He shared his love of football and golf with his sons, Gregg & Gary. He was a member of Chapel Hill United Methodist Church. His faith, love of his family, and caring for his patients were important to him. He was proud of his military service. A highlight was his Talons Out Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. in September 2017.
A Memorial Service will be held at the Baxter Funeral & Cremation Service, 375 W. Dickman Road, on Tuesday, August 23, 2022 at 12:30 pm.
Interment will take place in the Fort Custer National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Talons Out Honor Flight or the charity of one's choice.
