Obituary for Robert James Smith

Robert J. Smith “Bob” 72, of Battle Creek, MI, passed away on Tuesday, March 21, 2023 at the Laurels of Bedford in Battle Creek.

Bob was born on October 20, 1950 in Battle Creek, the son of Richard and Tharon (Hallock) Smith. Bob attended Harper Creek H.S during and after which he worked as a cook at Howard Johnson’s as well as other restaurants. Bob, then joined the U.S. Army and served for 3 yrs. spending time in Germany. He was very proud to serve his country.

Bob married Holly Daniels and they had a son, Rob, and step-son Andrew Daniels. The marriage ended in divorce.

Bob was a jack of all trades and worked in property maintenance before pursuing a career as a plumber. He worked for numerous companies before retiring in 2006.

Bob never lost his love for cooking. He would deliver meals to his ailing neighbors, as well as cook for his family and friends.
He enjoyed taking his great nephews fishing, and spending time with his grandsons and family. Bob also enjoyed taking Sarge, his beloved canine companion, everywhere he went and to visit family. They were inseparable.

Bob is survived by his sisters, Kathy (Roger) Golyar and Susie (Phil) Carnell both of Battle Creek, brother Richie (Faye) Smith of Delton, step-son Andrew Daniels, Bob’s partner of 19 yrs. Sarah Bowerman of Battle Creek, and special grandsons, Davion Holland and Shaden McCracken, Both of Battle Creek, along with many nieces and nephews.

Bob was preceded by his son, Rob Smith, brothers, Richard, Rick, and Charlie Smith, and sisters Amber Smith, Mary (Oscar) Chantrenne, Donna Eakins, and Julia Stevens.

Bob will be laid to rest at Fort Custer National Cemetery with his son Rob. Committal service will take place on Monday, April 3, 2023 at 1:00 pm. There will be a gathering of friends and family at the American Legion Post 298, 228 N 20th Street, Battle Creek, MI 49015, following the service.
