Obituary for Russell Gaius Masten

Russell Gaius Masten was born on October 2, 1947, in Battle Creek, Michigan. He was the oldest child of Mary Louise (Vaughn) and Joseph Devere Masten. Russell graduated from Battle Creek Central High School in 1965. Russell was active in Boy Scouts and was an Eagle Scout and active in the Order of the Arrow. He was very proud of his eagle scout and worked at Scout Camp every summer at the archery range. With his background in scouting, he started camping in the rendezvous style of pre-1940. He loved the history and re-enacted the camping style.

Russell married Judy Enos in May 1970 and adopted Deana into their new family. Then proceeded in having two children, Tara Blackburn (born 1972) and Phillip Masten (born 1974). This marriage ended in divorce. He then married Vicki J Goodenough and had a daughter, Danielle Lin (died 1982). This marriage also ended in divorce. In December of 2001, Russell married Julie Hobbs. Russell adopted Caleb Anthony and raised him through football, wrestling practices and rarely missed a game or match. Caleb was welcomed into Russell’s family with open arms.

Russell retired from United Steel and Wire in 2007. He always enjoyed High School sports and watching football, basketball and baseball on television. He loved seeing his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Russell left us on July 9, 2022 at Bronson Methodist Hospital.

Russell was a gentle soul and loved by many. Russell was preceded in death by his parents, brother and sister-in-law, Thomas and Teresa; his daughter, Danielle; great-grandson, Westyn; great-grandson, Gideon; and great-granddaughter, Seraphina. His memory will be cherished by his wife, Julie; his children, Deana Carson (Rick), Tara Blackburn, Phillip (Patti) Masten all of Battle Creek and Caleb Masten of Oceanside, California active in the U.S. Navy; 8 grandchildren and multiple great-grandchildren.

At this time a memorial celebration of Russell's life is being planned for a later date.
