Obituary for Samuel Lawrence Thorp Sr.

Samuel L. Thorp, 93 of Battle Creek, passed away November 6, 2020.
Sam was born on October 5, 1927 during The Great Depression. He was born and raised in Battle Creek.
As a teenager, Sam worked on a farm for .50 cents a day. He quit that farm and went to a neighboring farm where he was paid $75 a month. Sam went from being a farm hand to a deckhand working on the towboats of the Mississippi River. He spent some time in the Army before he went back to Battle Creek, where he worked at B.C. Gravel and then at Modern Transit for 35 years. He retired in 1989.
Sam met his wife Millie in 1954 where they had four kids. Sam and Millie were blissfully married for 50 years until she passed away in 2004. Sam is preceded in death by his wife and oldest son, Randy Thorp.
Sam was a member of the Moose Lodge, and was an avid fisher and hunter until recent years where he took to playing cards and watching western movies. Sam still liked to work outside and often helped his neighbors with their yard work even though they were decades younger than he was. Sam loved to cook and often made enough to feed an army.
Sam is survived by his Son, Larry (Diane) Thorp; Daughter, Sheila (Steve) Tullis, their two kids, Steve (Brandy) Tullis Jr., their children Brenna and Ryker; and Heather Tullis; Daughter, Vera (Miles) Jones, and their kids Miles and Sammi, and several other grandchildren and great grandchildren.
