Obituary for Shirley Ann Young


Shirley A. Young, 74, of Battle Creek, Michigan, died on Sunday, February 21, 2016 at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo.

Shirley was born in Marshall, Michigan to Orville L. and Norma L. (Williams) Chesley. Shirley was a graduate of Marshall High School and Argubright Business College.

Shirley was married to Michael A. Young on August 17, 1963 in Marshall, Michigan. Following their marriage, they resided in Great Falls, Montana for several years while Michael was stationed there with the Air Force, returning to Battle Creek in 1967. He survives her.

Shirley was a medical secretary for more than 30 years, working for various doctors in Battle Creek and Great Falls, Montana. She was a dedicated volunteer at the Calhoun County Medical Adult Day Care for 25 plus years, and was recently honored as their Volunteer of the Month.

Shirley enjoyed knitting and generously provided her family and friends annually with knitted dish cloths. She also enjoyed her flower and vegetable gardens. Shirley swam at the Battle Creek Y Center 3 times a week for several years and enjoyed the friends she made at the Y Center.

In addition to her husband, Michael, she is survived by their son, Christopher M. Young, of Battle Creek; granddaughters, Austin Young and Alexandria Young; and sisters, Betty (Michael) Halverson and Janet (David) Smith, both of Battle Creek. Also, sisters-in-law Sandra (Joe) Hall, Stephanie (David) Stanton, and Theresa (Dan) Bretl, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will take place at a later date. The family is being served by Baxter Funeral & Cremation Service. Memorial contributions may be made to Calhoun County Medical's Marion E. Burch Day Care or the American Diabetes Association.
