Obituary for Shirley Smith

Shirley Crockett Smith was born September 10, 1952 in Houston, Mississippi to Herbert and Willie Lee Crockett. Shirley graduated from Marked Tree High School in Marked Tree, Arkansas. She then moved to Battle Creek, Michigan where she furthered her education. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Social Work from Nazareth College and her Master’s degree in Social Work from Western Michigan University both in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Shirley enjoyed an amazing career in social work where she retired from the State of Michigan. She had a deep passion for working with children and the developmentally disabled. She enjoyed singing, landscaping, cooking, baking, and fishing. The Lord called Shirley to rest on March 10, 2021.

She leaves to cherish her lifelong legacy her daughter Barbara (Anthony) Travis, son Uriah (TraVonna) Smith, daughter-in-law Sheri Smith, brother Herbert Crockett Jr., sisters Mary (Frank) Purdy, Obera (Dan) Bradley, Odera Levis, Janice (Ulice) Carpenter, Ellie (Ferman) McClure, brothers William Crockett, John (Sheila) Crockett, sister Mozetta (Albert) Perry. Her grandchildren Dale Morris, Heaven (Aaron) Iverson, Darius Jones, Curtis Harris, LeRoy Smith III, LaZaine Smith, LaNiyah Graham, and soon to be born grandson. Her great grandchildren Giovinni Miller, D’Nayah Morris, D’Zavin Morris, Lincoln Morris, Adonis Iverson, and Armelle Iverson. She is preceded in death by her parents, brothers Jehu Crockett, and Herman Crockett, and son LeRoy Smith Jr. Shirley will be remembered for her infectious laugh, singing, and the many ways she impacted the lives of those in need.

The funeral service will be held at the Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, 636 W. Van Buren Street, on Tuesday, March 16, 2021, 12:00 pm with the family receiving friends one hour prior to the start of service. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.
