Shirley Jean (Thomas) Spencer, 66, of Battle Creek, Michigan passed away April 27, 2021 after a brief battle with ALS. She was born August 10, 1954, in Coldwater, Michigan to Gerald P. Thomas and Jane A. (Walker) Thomas.
Shirley graduated from Pennfield High School located in Battle Creek, Michigan in 1972. Following graduation, she married the love of her life, Curtis Spencer, on December 14, 1973. The two met at Vacation Bible School at the young age of 14 and celebrated 47 years of marriage this past December. They had a love that transcended all barriers.
In 1972, Shirley worked for the City Assessor's Office until the birth of her first son in 1975. She later opened an in-home daycare where she loved each child as her own. In 1995, Shirley began her career with Battle Creek Public Schools working in the kitchen. She retired in February of 2015.
Of all things in life there was nothing she loved more than her family and two dogs, McKenna and Maxx. Her husband, children and grandchildren were her world. She had a heart that would never stop giving, always thinking of others before herself. She is survived by her husband, Curtis Spencer; sons, Jeremy (Tracie) Spencer and Jonathan (Darcy) Spencer; a daughter, Jennifer (Michael) Cochard; grandchildren, Taryn, Teagan, Lilly, Grayson, Gavin, Kyler, Romeo, Chase, Kendall, Reagan, Elise, Kaydyn, Kyler, and Oliver; sisters, Barbra Blyss and Betty (David) Bostwick; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, Daniel Thomas and her parents, Gerald and Jane Thomas.
Due to COVID restrictions, a small service will take place May 05, 2021 at 2:00 PM for immediate family at Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to ALS of Michigan online at alsofmichigan.org.
