Obituary for Thorwald Charles Schimberg

Thorwald "Thor" Charles Schimberg, 96, of Springfield, MI passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on January 11, 2023.

Thor was born on March 9, 1926 in Escanaba, MI the son of Charles Schimberg and Sarah Ann Bergeon.

Thor proudly served in the United States Army Air Corp during the World War II era, stationed in England, a part of the 8th Bomb Wing, serving as a B17 Ball Turret Gunner.

After 26 years, Thor retired from Kellogg's in 1986. He also worked at Eaton Manufacturing from 1950-1960.

Thor and Helen were avid music lovers. He was self-taught and played the harmonica from his childhood all the way up until the day he died. Thor was a 20+ year member of the Wolverine Harmonica Club. He and Helen also enjoyed dancing and the two belonged to the Lowrey Organ Club.

Thor is survived by his sons, Charles Schimberg of Tennessee, Paul (Jennifer) W. DePew of South Carolina, Joseph DePew of Michigan; sister, Carol Stansbury of Michigan; brothers, William "Bill" Schimberg of Michigan, Donald Zimmerman of Florida; his amazing caretakers and support system were his great niece, Stacey Keesling and niece, Dawn Zimmerman-Sanders both of Michigan. He is also survived by his grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and great great nieces.

Thor was preceded in death by his loving wife of 65 years, Helen Peaslee DePew Schimberg; daughter-in-law, Diane Schimberg and brother, Leland Schimberg.

Full military honors service and committal will be held at the Fort Custer National Cemetery on Friday, January 20, 2023 at 11:30 am.
