Obituary

Our mother, Tirzah (Hartung) Flees Foster, 87, died peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family. Her house, famous for its magnified holiday decorations, was a home filled with generous love for everyone that entered. The center of her home was the kitchen table, where stories were told, cards were played, and love shared. She met and married Robert A. Flees while working together at Kellogg Company. He preceded her in death. Tirzah raised five children, Robert (Sue) Flees, Gregory (Kelly) Flees, Brenda (George) Bucklin, Brian Flees, and Matthew Flees. She married Richard Foster; which lasted 25 years and also preceded her in death. Richard brought his wonderful children into the family including, Connie Foster, Carol (Mike) Adams, Charon (Guillermo) Leal, and Steve Foster.

Tirzah was born and raised in Marshall, Michigan by parents, Harold and Martha Hartung, who along with three sisters preceded her in death. Tirzah took great pride in working for the Dodges at the dime store followed by a 38 years career at the Kellogg Company. A highlight there was when she was selected in the 1956 as the “Sweetheart of the Corn”.

Her summers were filled with trips to Leland, Michigan, Binder Park Zoo, and caring for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They include: Ryan (Jill) Flees and Zachary; Jessie (Derek) Bucklin-Selby and Georgia and Leland; Ted Flees and Dr. Patrick Long; Brandon (Kristen) Bucklin and Brynnley, Kaia, and Blayke; Ashley Flees and Mason; Andrea Flees and Joshua Flees. Tirzah had a great love for her dogs, Annie, Molly, and Cocoa. As her health declined, she was especially grateful for her caregivers, Martha Lake and Tammy Dickens. The family is also thankful for the wonderful care she received from Oaklawn Hospital and their homecare services.

In accordance with Tirzah’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a gathering of friends and family will be held at Baxter’s Funeral & Cremation, 375 W. Dickman Rd., Battle Creek on Friday, October 9 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Tirzah’s name may be made to Binder Park Zoo or to the charitable organization of your choice.

My lasting memories of mom are simple: a hard working, passionate figure of strength who never waned in her support or love of her family and soldiered on even when times were tough. In life we loved her dearly, in death we love her still, in our hearts you hold a place no one could ever-fill.

What a beautiful life she lived and there was no doubt that she loved her family deeply. We will always remember her as a kind and caring person. I remember when I went to see her in the hospital after she just had heart surgery and before I could get the words out of my mouth she picked her little head up off the pillow and said “Well how are you doing darling, are you OK?” You see, I just had a simple knee surgery and she was more concerned about me than herself, but that was the kind of person she was. Aunt Tirzah was hard working but she also knew how to have fun. And if you knew her you would know that she was quick witted with her sense of humor, she could always make you laugh. There are many things that I admired about her but the one that comes to mind most is that she was easy to talk to. We are going to miss her.
We are very sorry for your loss.
