A Childhood Friend

Andy was a friend of mine.  We attended Lillian C. Schmitt Elementary and Northside Junior High together in Columbus, Indiana.  (I am also in two of the posted pictures.)  He lived over on Sycamore and I lived on Wildwood Lane, but we often visited each other.  He was smart, interesting and fun to be around because of his eccentricities (even when he was young).  He had a brightly painted bomb casing in the corner of his bedroom and called his oscilliscope his "silly scope".  He also kept empty Hi-C cans on the top shelf of his closet so that "If all the air disappeared, I would still have some left."  Sometimes he liked climbing through his second story window to the flat roof of his house to go in and out.  He introduced me to the Beatles "I Am the Walrus" and "Yesterday," and to Robert Heinlein's "Stranger In a Strange Land."  We even visited each other long-distance after we both moved away from Columbus.  He came to Mentor, Ohio and I saw him in Indianapolis.  I even saw him again at Indiana University, but I only attended for a semester before I left.  And that was the last time I saw him.  I was sorry to find out he died so young.  (I was Googling him just to see where he was.)
