Stitched With Love
Christmas with Grandpa Corkins and Les always meant leaving with a handmade gift. They were different each year, and treasured for years beyond. Many a scarf or wooden art piece was lovingly constructed each Holiday season. The recipient left the Christmas get together filled not only with a full tummy but also a sense of belonging. I was not a "blood" grandchild of Jim, but that did not keep him from showing me the same kindness he bestowed on his biological grandchildren. He would quietly hand over the gifts; to everyone. Now, if you know Norm and Kris, then you know that between the two of them they had a brood of children. I happen to be one of them. Between the two of them, they would fill up a station wagon or bust the seams out of the backseat of any four door (seatbelts were optional at that time, of course). I imagine many a blister being formed crocheting scarves, hats and mittens for 5 kids and eventually that number grew to 6. I think that I would have encouraged the love of cooking in those kids and made a few potholders instead! But it wasn't about the actual gift that made it so special as much as the time and love put into the gift. What a beautiful legacy to instill in children. That everyone is important and worth your investment of time. I will hold that truth close to my heart along with great memories of Grandpa Corkins.
